A community known for its struggles is showing off its strengths today.
Live music helped residents of the Downtown Eastside kick off the 12th annual Hope in Shadows photography contest.
The three-day contest aims to give residents of the troubled neighbourhood a chance to take pride in their community.
Residents are given a free camera and are expected to submit more than 3000 photos for cash prizes.
Their photos are also printed into a calendar, which is then sold by low income residents who share the profits.
More than 75,000 calendars have been sold since 2003.
