How Calgary’s traffic controllers ease gridlock during crashes

CALGARY- No one can predict when emergencies will happen, but the experts in Calgary’s traffic management centre do some incredible behind-the-scenes work when it comes to easing the impact on other drivers.

On Monday morning, Crowchild Trail turned into a parking lot following a serious collision during the morning commute. It prompted police to close off a number of lanes for hours, making for a maddening drive to work.

At the same time, those in the traffic management centre rushed into action.

“We immediately identify where the alternate routes and detour routes people can potentially take are,” explains city traffic manager Gord Elenko.

He adds that they use traffic cameras to potentially adjust signal timing in those intersections, allowing for greater movement of traffic. They also work on getting the message out to drivers.
