WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets are pleased with the job head coach Paul Maurice has done in his four months with the team.
The NHL team rewarded him Wednesday with a four-year contract extension.
“He’s an impressive hockey coach but he’s an impressive person as well,” said general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff. “We believe we’re just scratching the surface on the impact he can make.”
Maurice, 47, joined the Jets last January and guided the team to an 18-12-5 record over 35 games. He replaced Claude Noel, who was fired at the end of a five-game skid.
The Jets had a 37-35-10 record on the season and settled for an 11th-place finish in the Western Conference standings with 84 points.
It was the third straight year they have missed the playoffs since relocating to Winnipeg from Atlanta.
